This colour sorter was such a amazing project for me, I loved doing it so much!
It’s easy to do and so nice once finished, and River loves it too. Making the colour sorter, I kind of made it up as i went. It turned out so lovely so i decided to make a pattern for it. I hope you love this project as much as I did.
Notes
- This pattern uses US terms
- It’s best to use a stitch marker, removing it when you get to that stitch and replacing once you’ve done that stitch.
- All of the balls follow the same pattern
- All of the baskets follow the same pattern
- I used an invisible decrease (click here to see a step by step on how) i find that when I use this stitch that my decreases are invisible and looks much neater.
Materials used
- 3 mm hook
- Stylecraft yarn – Rainbow Brights
- stitch marker
- tapestry needle
- Scissors
Terminology used
- Sc = single crochet
- inc = increase
- inv dec = invisible decrease
- Sts = stitches

Baskets (Make 7)
Thinks about which colour basket you want for the middle of the shape sorter and make this colour first and do not cut the yarn when you have finished this basket, you will be using this yarn to attach the baskets.
Round 1: 6 sc in magic circle [6]
Round 2: inc to the end of the round [12 Sts]
Round 3: (1 sc, 1 inc) repeat to the end of the round [18 sts]
Round 4: (2 sc, 1 inc) repeat to the end of the round [24 sts]
Round 5: (3 sc, 1 inc) repeat to the end of the round [30 sts]
Round 6: (4 sc, 1 inc) repeat to the end of the round [36 sts]
Round 7: sc in the back loop of every stitch To end of the round [36 sts]
Round 8- 11: sc in every stitch repeat to the end of the round [36 sts]
Attaching the baskets
Of course you can leave the colour sorting baskets the way they are (separate) or you can attach the baskets to form a hexagon shape.
With the yarn still attached to the first basket that you made, start to attach the other baskets one by one.
I did this by counting how many stitch’s you have and dividing them by the number of sides, so that they are even.
For me this was 6 stitches
I attached each basket with 6 slip stitches, carrying on until all baskets are attached.
To make it more secure I then slip stitched 6 stitches on each side of the circles (leaving the middle 12 sts) to make a hexagon shape.
And now you have your colour sorter, I hope you enjoy 😊
